La fondazione originaria dell'edificio è anteriore al XV secolo e costituisce una naturale cerniera tra Piazzetta Reale e Piazza San Giovanni. Passato nel 1642 al cardinale Maurizio di Savoia, esso divenne in seguito sede di uffici della Corte reale. Nel 1753 il Re Carlo Emanuele III affidò all'architetto Benedetto Alfieri l'incarico di riplasmare la residenza per il secondogenito Benedetto Maria Maurizio, duca del Chiablese: fu allora ridisegnata la facciata e costruito il maestoso scalone che conduce al piano nobile, ricco di arredi, stucchi, boiseries, specchiere e sovrapporte dipinte. Durante il periodo napoleonico il palazzo fu sede del governatore Camillo Borghese e della sua celebre moglie, Paolina Borghese. Tornato ai Savoia con la Restaurazione, nel 1851 vi nacque Margherita, prima Regina d'Italia. Danneggiato dai bombardamenti durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, passò in seguito al Demanio; l'edificio, oggi completamente restaurato, ospita la Direzione Regionale per i Beni Culturali e Paesaggistici del Piemonte insieme ad uffici delle Soprintendenze. Da settembre 2011 la collaborazione tra la Direzione Regionale e il Touring Club Italiano rende possibile regolari visite a Palazzo Chiablese. Nel 2005 il TCI ha avviato l'iniziativa "Aperti per Voi" per favorire l'apertura di luoghi di cultura (musei, aree archeologiche, palazzi storici, chiese, ...) attraverso la collaborazione de I Volontari per il Patrimonio Culturale, con l'intento di promuovere e diffondere la conoscenza dei beni culturali consentendo le visite di luoghi solitamente chiusi al pubblico o aperti con orari ridottissimi. Attualmente il progetto è presente in 22 città italiane con oltre 1200 volontari.
