Nel 1839 Carlo Alberto acquista da Giovanni Volpato un collezionista autodidatta originario di Chieri, che viaggiando per l'Europa aveva messo insieme un'interessante collezione personale, una raccolta di disegni dal Quattrocento al Settecento, opera di grandi maestri italiani e stranieri, tra i quali Michelangelo, Raffaello, Rembrandt e Leonardo da Vinci. Di Leonardo da Vinci, in particolare, la biblioteca possiede il famoso Autoritratto a sanguigna, il Ritratto di Fanciulla, studio per il volto dell'angelo nel quadro La Vergine delle Rocce (conservato al Louvre) e il Codice sul volo degli uccelli, un quaderno cartaceo di 18 carte nel quale Leonardo annotò le sue considerazioni sul volo. Il prezioso manoscritto giunge alla Biblioteca Reale alla fine dell'Ottocento, come dono al re Umberto I da parte di Teodoro Sabachnikoff, mecenate russo innamorato del Rinascimento italiano. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, con il passaggio allo Stato dei beni di Casa Savoia (perfezionato nel caso della Biblioteca Reale solo nel 1970) la Biblioteca Reale diviene una biblioteca pubblica statale e attualmente fa parte del Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo.
