La Biblioteca Reale viene fondata nel 1831 da Carlo Alberto di Savoia-Carignano, salito al trono quello stesso anno, che ambisce a dare un impulso allo sviluppo del Piemonte attraverso la promozione di riforme amministrative e politiche e rivalutando le arti e le istituzioni culturali. Il progetto di promozione di Carlo Alberto prevede l'ampliamento della biblioteca di corte, alla quale il sovrano decide di unire gli innumerevoli volumi che vengono acquistati presso gli antiquari di tutta Europa, oltre alla sua raccolta personale, ricca di volumi appartenuti alla nonna paterna Giuseppina di Lorena-Carignano, donna colta e aperta alle nuove idee del Settecento. Tale ampliamento è reso necessario dalla decurtazione delle collezioni reali in seguito alla donazione di Vittorio Amedeo II di gran parte della sua biblioteca alla Regia Università di Torino nel 1723 (l'attuale Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria).La biblioteca conserva circa 200.000 volumi, 4.500 manoscritti, 3.055 disegni, 187 incunaboli, 5.019 cinquecentine, 1.500 pergamene, 1.112 periodici, 400 album fotografici, carte geografiche, incisioni e stampe.
