Anticamente chiamata Sala delle Dignità per l'apparato decorativo seicentesco, perduto in seguito a un incendio, questa anticamera deve la sua denominazione attuale al corpo di guardia posto un tempo a sorveglianza dell'ambiente. La decorazione del soffitto ricostruito nel 1844 su disegno di Pelagio Palagi, rimase incompiuta per l'improvvisa morte del pittore Carlo Bellosio, cui erano state commissionate le tele dei lacunari. Nei riquadri del fregio, dipinti da Francesco Gonin, si celebrano le dignità e gli onori di cui furono insigniti i principi sabaudi; ad essi si alternano figure femminili in stucco dorato, allegorie di alcune città del Regno di Sardegna. Di committenza carloalbertina le tre grandi tele: a destra. Il giudizio di Salomone di Francesco Podesti; al centro Guglielmo Embriaco condottiero di crociati genovesi alla presa di Cesarea, vi conquista il Sacro Catino di Vincenzo Rasori; a sinistra. La sete patita dai primi crociati sotto Gerusalemme, di Francesco Hayez. I due arazzi, raffiguranti L'Acqua e La Terra, sono opere tardo-seicentesche della manifattura francese di Beauvais.
