La costruzione del Palazzo ebbe inizio a seguito del trasferimento della capitale del ducato da Chambery a Torino per volontà di Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, insediatosi temporaneamente dal 1563 nell'antica dimora del Vescovo. La nuova residenza fu avviata seguendo i progetti di Ascanio Vittozzi per il duca Carlo Emanuele I all'inizio del '600. Impostato su una pianta quadrangolare intorno ad una corte interna e protetto da torri secondo il sistema "a padiglioni", il Palazzo conobbe una nuova stagione architettonica e decorativa sotto Maria Cristina di Francia, prima Madama Reale, che affidò ad Amedeo di Castellamonte il completamento degli appartamenti. Dimensioni e ricchezza del Palazzo crebbero in parallelo al potere del casato: dopo aver ottenuto il titolo regio nel 1713, Vittorio Amedeo II introdusse a corte l'architetto Filippo Juvarra, che lasciò fondamentali testimonianze della sua arte. Sempre nel corso del '700, la dimora continuò ad arricchirsi di pregevoli ambienti, nonché di collezioni di porcellane e arazzi. Ultima significativa fase di riplasmazione delle sale fu quella legata al re Carlo Alberto, per opera di Pelagio Palagi. Con la proclamazione del Regno d'Italia e il trasferimento della capitale prima a Firenze e poi a Roma, Palazzo Reale perse d'importanza. Nonostante ciò alcuni interventi minori furono promossi prima dalla regina Margherita (tra '800 e '900) esuccessivamente, dal principe ereditario Umberto, quando. con la sua presenza, diede nuova vita al Palazzo (1925-1931).
