A sinistra Santa Francesca Romana Olio su tela 194 x 177 cm L'opera fu commissionata a Guercino nel 1656 dai Monaci Olivetani di Bologna. La tela ? rimeditazione di un prototipo messo a punto dall'artista tra il 1637 e il 1638 nella tela di medesimo soggetto per la chiesa di Santa Maria in Organo a Verona ? è connotata da un linguaggio cadenzato, austero e devoto che, legato a un'originaria destinazione ecclesiastica, ne decretò il rapido successo, trasformandola in un modello per la pittura religiosa dei decenni a seguire. L'opera conferma la profonda influenza che Guercino, a capo di una vasta bottega, seppe avere anche durante la fase matura e tarda della carriera, benché operoso da una sede relativamente periferica come Cento. Donata già nel 1657 dall'abate Orafi a Cristina di Francia, e collocata nel Palazzo Reale di Torino, la pala giunse in Sabauda per via dinastica. A destra Madonna della Benedizione Olio su tela 188 x 135 cm La pala ? commissionata dal conte Falcombelli per il suo altare nella chiesa di San Giuseppe dei Gesuiti a Pinerolo, nei pressi di Torino ? venne realizzata dal Guercino nel 1651, come testimonia fra l'altro l'iscrizione in basso a destra. Il modello iconografico della Vergine con il Bambino è stato identificato nel gruppo scultoreo della Madonna delle Vigne di Genova, eseguito nel 1616 e replicato nei decenni centrali del Seicento anche in Piemonte da molti artisti di formazione ligure. L'impianto tradizionale e il gusto classicista che pervadono la tela non oscurano le capacità innovatrici del pittore emiliano: egli riuscì a valorizzare le forme tramite sottili modulazioni di colore e di luce e attraverso una composizione molto equilibrata, che dal primo piano introduce all'armonioso paesaggio sullo sfondo. L'opera fu donata alla Galleria torinese nel 1836
