Un ruolo chiave nella Galleria Sabaudo è occupato dal principe Eugenio di Sassonia Soissons (1663-1736) considerato uno dei più grandi committenti d'Europa. Sulla sinistra (olio su tela 396 x 275 cm) l'opera venne eseguita da Jacob van Schuppen, la cui firma compare su una pietra nella parte inferiore del dipinto. L'esecuzione cadde nel 1718-1720: nell'iscrizione Schuppen si dichiara al servizio del duca di Lorena, anziché pittore di corte dell'imperatore Carlo VI d'Asburgo, carica raggiunta nel 1721. Esso raffigura il grande condottiero Eugenio di Savoia Soissons, protagonista di una serie di vittorie contro le armate turche, fra l'altro nel 1716 e 1717. Nel registro superiore della composizione campeggiano le figure allegoriche della Fama, della Vittoria e della Fede e due putti che sorreggono lo stemma del principe, effigiato in sella al suo destriero mentre impugna il bastone del comando. Schuppen tenne conto di un altro suo dipinto di analogo soggetto, realizzato soltanto pochi mesi prima, nel 1718, e oggi al Rijksmuseum di Amsterdam. Già nella collezione viennese del principe Eugenio, la tela era esposta nel 1736 nel Belvedere Superiore; dal 1770 è documentata a Torino a Palazzo Carignano. Ultimo e decisivo protagonista della Sabauda fu Carlo Alberto di Savoia Carignano. Il Re ispirato da principi di moderato liberalismo appresi in Francia, inaugurò la Galleria nel 1832: due anni più tardi si fece ritrarre in groppa ad un destriero da Horace Vernet.Olio su tela 407 x 342,5 cm è il quadro al centro della sala:Horace Vernet ottenne questa prestigiosa commissione nel maggio del 1834, portandola a termine nel giugno successivo a Roma ? come peraltro attestano la data e la firma ? dove ricopriva la carica di direttore dell'Accademia di Francia. Il dipinto raffigura il re di Sardegna Carlo Alberto, che nel 1832 fondò l'allora denominata Reale Galleria destinando alla fruizione pubblica le collezioni provenienti dal Palazzo Reale e da altre dimore dinastiche. Vernet prese spunto da un modello iconografico che aveva impiegato a più riprese dal 1824, fra l'altro nei ritratti equestri dello zar Alessandro I di Russia, del duca di Angoulème e di Carlo X di Francia, questi ultimi entrambi nel Museo di Versailles. Il dipinto giunse in Sabauda nel 1835. sulla destra troviamo il ritratto di Carlo Emanuele I fanciullo Olio su tela 191 x 115 cm Il dipinto, firmato "Jacobus Argenta F.M.", raffigura Carlo Emanuele I (1562-1630) all'età di circa dieci anni. Il fanciullo, vestito alla spagnola, è raffigurato accanto a Fabio, il nano di corte. L'intonazione "asburgica" del dipinto, che risente dall'attività condotta dal pittore presso la Corte imperiale, si accorda con la datazione intorno al 1572. L'esattezza fisionomica e l'espressione arguta e sorridente del giovane duca si ritrovano in altri ritratti, quali il busto di marmo conservato nel Museo Civico d'Arte Antica di Torino e in quelli bronzei del Palazzo Reale di Torino e del Philadelphia Museum of Art. Il dipinto proviene dal Palazzo Reale di Torino.
