Olio su tavola trasportata su tela 174 x 77 cm L'opera venne realizzata da Botticelli, probabilmente con il concorso della bottega. È databile al 1485- 1490. La dea, vestita soltanto di un sottilissimo velo, è raffigurata su di un piedistallo e si staglia nitida sul fondo scuro. I riferimenti iconografici risiedono nel tipo statuario antico della Venere pudica e nella coeva Nascita di Venere dello stesso Botticelli, ora agli Uffizi. Si tratta ? come d'altronde il pezzo allo Staatliche Museen di Berlino ? di una delle rare testimonianze sopravvissute di quegli straordinari nudi femminili che l'artista destinò alla committenza privata, celebrati già dalle fonti rinascimentali. L'opera, un tempo su tavola, venne poi trasferita su tela.Acquistata a Firenze nel 1844 dal reverendo inglese Walter Davemport Bromley, dopo diversi passaggi di proprietà entrò nel 1920 nella collezione di Riccardo Gualino, che dieci anni dopo la donò alla Galleria Sabauda.
