Inoltre i temporali supercellulari sono strutturati in modo ben preciso: si ha la zona dei rovesci sul lato nord-est del temporale (in gergo FFD, forward flank downdraft) e poi il mesociclone situato sul bordo sud-ovest. Al di sotto di esso si può formare la wall cloud (quel ribassamento al di sotto del quale c'è il tornado). Nella genesi di un eventuale tornado gioca un ruolo fondamentale l'RFD (rear flank downdraft) che è una corrente discendente più fredda e secca che si trova in questo bordo posteriore del temporale. Ed è l'RFD che può dare talvolta questo aspetto "bucato" sotto il temporale, come si vede a sinistra del tornado, perchè essendo aria più secca in effetti la nube evapora in quel punto.
Infine siccome tutta la struttura ruota, parte delle precipitazioni dell'FFD vengono richiamate dal mesociclone e finiscono per avvolgersi attorno ad esso e alla wall cloud, oscurando a volte solo parzialmente un eventuale tornado, o altre volte completamente.
Il "famoso" eco ad uncino di cui si parla anche nel film Twister, altro non è che la trasposizione al radar di questo fenomeno. La pioggia che viene richiamata nel bordo posteriore del mesociclone crea questo eco radar simile ad un uncino. L'eventuale tornado si trova proprio in sua prossimità.
