Questa foto racchiude tanti ricordi di una giornata che avrebbe cambiato il corso dello "stormchasing" per sempre e anche il modo in cui io stessa sono sempre stata abituata a concepire questa mia passione. Siamo a sud di El Reno, Oklahoma, il 31 maggio 2013 e poche decine di minuti dopo questo scatto, sotto quella wall cloud (il ribassamento circolare ben visibile) prenderà vita un tornado che verrà per sempre ricordato nella storia per 2 ragioni. Primo: il tornado di El Reno ha battuto una serie di record in un colpo solo: -tornado più largo della storia (ampiezza max 4,2km) -ha cambiato direzione di 90° in meno di 30 secondi -sempre in quel lasso di meno di 30 secondi ha quasi raddoppiato la velocità di spostamento ingigantendosi di quasi 4 volte Secondo: per queste sue incredibili e uniche caratteristiche ha travolto e ucciso dei ricercatori sul campo per la prima volta nella storia. In questa data infatti, nemmeno 30 minuti dopo questo scatto, i ricercatori/meteorologi Tim Samaras, il figlio Paul Samaras e Carl Young, sono stati coinvolti dalla circolazione tornadica e la loro auto è stata travolta e trasportata per quasi 1 km, mentre si trovavano sul campo per depositare i sensori sul percorso del vortice. Tim Samaras era un uomo di 54 anni, da decenni sul campo, una vita dedicata a studiare questi fenomeni per aumentare i tempi di allerta e salvare vite umane. La persona più umile, disponibile, gentile ed estremamente CAUTA che io abbia mai avuto modo di conoscere nell'ambito dello stormchasing. Se lo incontravi in una stazione di servizio e avevi una domanda per lui o volevi scambiare 2 parole, qualunque cosa egli stesse facendo...mollava tutto, ti ascoltava, rispondeva alle tue domande. Il resto era secondario. In anni e anni di chasing non ha mai sbandierato quanto fosse bravo e quanti tornado o quante foto avesse fatto, non si è mai bullato di questo o di quel video. Lui era lì per studiare e per rispettare madre natura e ciò a cui assisteva. Se c'erano pericoli sul campo o situazioni troppo rischiose, richiamava indietro tutto il suo team. "Domani ci saranno altri tornado", questo era il suo spirito. Quel 31 maggio Tim Samaras e il suo gruppo si trovavano poco a nord-est della circolazione tornadica, pronti per fare il loro lavoro: depisitare i sensori sul percorso del vortice. Quest'ultimo, dopo un iniziale movimento verso sud-est ha improvvisamente virato di 90° andando a nord-est e mentre compiva questa manovra è divenuto quasi 4 volte più grande (passando da meno di 1km a oltre 4) e raddoppiando quasi la velocità di spostamento. In tutti questi frangenti spesse bande di pioggia lo oscuravano alla vista a chiunque si trovasse a est o nord-est. "Siamo in una brutta posizione", sono le parole di Tim Samaras poche decine di secondi prima di venire travolti (audio recuperato dal video della videocamera ritrovata nei campi). "We're going to die" pochi secondi prima di morire, quando ormai, nonostante schiacciassero a fondo l'acceleratore, i venti attorno al tornado li avevano avvolti ed erano troppo forti per permettere all'auto di allontanarsi. Poche ore dopo, accanto ad un campo esattamente come quello in foto, è stato ritrovato ciò che restava della Chevy Cobalt dei 3 ricercatori. Il motore del'auto, strappato dal tornado, è stato ritrovato a 800 metri di distanza. Una morte assurda, capitata alla persona che meno in assoluto si sarebbe mai meritata una fine simile. Suona retorico lo so, ma basta a chiunque scrivere il nome di Tim, fare una piccola ricerca su di lui, per sentirsi il cuore stringere con questa vicenda. L'immagine che avrò sempre di lui è quella di un gentile signore, con i jeans e la sua camicia sportiva, che deposita i suoi sensori rosso sgargiante sul percorso di un tornado e che con gli occhi di un bambino osserva il vortice allontanarsi all'orizzonte nelle distese infinite delle Plains americane. #temporale #tornado #supercella
