Il serval o gattopardo non vive in branchi ed è riservato e solitario, lo si può vedere con fortuna prevalentemente dopo il tramonto. Caccia roditori, piccoli rettili, uccelli e grossi insetti che segue e rintraccia servendosi anche del suo eccellente udito (grandi padiglioni auricolari), e solitamente cattura al volo compiendo balzi anche di 3 mt. Il suo maggior "predatore" è purtroppo l'uomo che da sempre lo caccia per la sua preziosa pelliccia, l'uomo ne ha causato il rischio di estinzione in alcune zone dell'Africa meridionale.

Visto per circa un paio di minuti a 5 metri nel Masai Mara in pieno giorno, a detta della guida un incontro veramente raro vedere un serval in pieno giorno.
