DAL WEB: """ Il territorio di Matera fu abitato ininterrottamente fin dal paleolitico. Una intera città scavata nella roccia chiamata localmente "tufo", un sistema abitativo articolato, abbarbicato lungo i pendii di un profondo vallone dalle caratteristiche naturali singolari e sorprendenti: la Gravina. Strutture edificate, eleganti ed articolate si alternano a labirinti sotterranei e a meandri cavernosi, creando un unicum paesaggistico di grande effetto. I Sassi, che fino alla fine del 1700 erano un esempio di integrazione perfetta fra l'uomo e l'ambiente, hanno subito negli ultimi due secoli un degrado notevole, che li ha portati all'appellativo di "vergogna nazionale". Diventano una sorta di ghetto contadino dove le condizioni sociali si fanno sempre più difficili Nel 1948 nasce la questione dei Sassi di Matera, sollevata da Palmiro Togliatti prima, e da Alcide De Gasperi dopo. I Sassi diventano il simbolo nazionale dell'arretratezza e del sottosviluppo del meridione d'Italia. Nel 1952 si giunge allo stanziamento di fondi per la costruzione di nuovi quartieri residenziali che avrebbero costituito la città nuova nella quale far confluire le 15.000 persone che abitavano le case-grotta. La città di Matera diventa così un autentico laboratorio; nasce la Commissione per lo studio della città e dell'agro di Matera. """"" Questa una delle ultime case abbandonate- in alto si intravede il letto. la scalinata portava alla cantina ma anche al ricovero degli animali. Difatti i gradini, di tufo, sono consumati dagli zoccoli. Mia moglie in pausa per circa 1 minuto. Nel 1986 una nuova legge nazionale finanzia il recupero degli antichi rioni materani, ormai degradati da oltre trent'anni di abbandono.
