Il castello di Fougères (in francese: ch?teau de Fougères; in bretone Kastell Felger) è uno dei più celebri[1] castelli della Bretagna (Francia nord-occidentale), nonché di uno dei più imponenti di tutt'Europa[2]: si tratta di una fortezza medievale eretta nel XII secolo e più volte ampliata sino al XV secolo, posizionata su un isolotto roccioso sul fiume Nançon nella cittadina di Fougères (ca. 50 km a nord-est di Rennes; dipartimento di Ille-et-Vilaine, nella Bretagna orientale), in una zona che un tempo rappresentava il confine tra il Regno di Francia e il Ducato di Bretagna[3]. La costruzione, una vera e propria cittadella fortificata che sostituì un preesistente castello in legno distrutto dagli Inglesi nel 1166[4], era stata concepita per accogliere la popolazione della città durante gli attacchi dei nemici[5]. Il castello ebbe un'enorme importanza militare fino al XV secolo, ovvero fino a quando il Ducato di Bretagna non perse la propria indipendenza[6]. È classificato come monumento storico sin dal 1892[7] ed è ora di proprietà del comune di Fougères[8].
