In Islanda risiede il più antico geyser conosciuto al mondo, tant'è che l'etimologia della stessa parola va ricercata nel verbo Islandese "gjósa" "emettere a fiotti" e da cui deriva il suo nome: Geysir. Geysir purtroppo è inattivo dal 1990 ma nel periodo antecedente era in grado di lanciare i suoi fiotti sino ad un altezza record di 170 metri. Le cause di questo suo riposo paiono essere riconducibili a due cause: - l'abitudine assolutamente idiota dei turisti di gettare pietre nella sua "bocca" allo scopo di provocare eruzioni - Il buttare all'interno del condotto delle saponette al fine aumentare la portata del getto da parte delle autorità preposte alla sua tutela, attività ora per fortuna vietata. Negli ultimi anni il re dei geyser ha fortunatamente ripreso, seppur debolmente ed in modo altamente irregolare, la sua attività. Non molto distante da Geysir si trova Strokkur, un geyser più piccolo ma estremamente attivo! Le sue eruzioni, al contrario, sono molto frequenti (una ogni 10 minuti) e, anche se il suo getto non ha mai raggiunto i record del fratello maggiore (al massimo 40 metri), sicuramente rimarrete stupiti dalla sua potenza e da quella insolita vista. Il suo lento gorgoglio iniziale e le buffe forme create dall'acqua sono il preludio ad una delle sue improvvise esplosioni di vapore, accompagnate dal rumore roboante del vapore acqueo che si spande nell'aria e dalle voci esterrefatte dei numerosi turisti che accorrono per vedere quest'altra meraviglia d'Islanda.
