Di tanto in tanto un cinguettio lontano di cince ravviva uno scenario immobile: alberi scuri e imponenti si stagliano su una sconfinata distesa di foglie colorate. La luce filtra a fatica e, colpendo il manto di foglie e i tronchi ricoperti di muschio, solleva vapori che risalgono lenti come respiri quieti. Cammino ormai da ore: forse oggi è una di quelle giornate in cui devo accontentarmi di una rilassante passeggiata nei boschi. Un suono cupo e ripetuto in lontananza mi fa improvvisamente sobbalzare: è un cervo in bramito. Sono due, li sento: si sfidano a distanza con versi prolungati e profondi. Risalgo a fatica un crinale guidato dalle loro voci e, in una radura più in basso, riesco finalmente a scorgerne uno: è in una fitta macchia di arbusti, ma lentamente si sta muovendo in direzione dell'antagonista di cui intravedo soltanto il palco.
