L'ordine dei Cistercensi ebbe origine del 1098 a Citeaux in Borgogna quando Roberto di Molesme volle ricondurre la regola benedettina alla semplicità delle origini. Nel milanese possiamo trovare due delle loro più importanti abbazie: Morimondo e Chiaravalle. L'architettura cistercense si fonda sul cosiddetto "progetto pilota" di Bernardo.
