A fondare l'Abbazia di Morimondo furono nel 1134 dei monaci Cistercensi provenienti dall'Abbazia francese di Morimond, a nord di Digione. Fin dai suoi primi decenni il monastero divenne un centro promotore della colonizzazione agricola e della bonifica, accumulando possedimenti rilevanti. Fin dalla metà del 1400, però, Morimondo cominciò a perdere d'importanza e nel 1799, sotto Napoleone, l'Abbazia fu soppressa. Soltanto dal 1952 ha ripreso ad essere abitata da monaci. Due arconi introducono nel suggestivo piazzale, dominato da un fianco della chiesa abbaziale intitolata a Santa Maria Nascente, costruita fra il 1182 e il 1292. La pianta è basilicale a tre navate, con volte rette da archi a sesto acuto che poggiano su pilastri cilindrici. Sulla crociera poggia un piccolo tiburio ottagonale. Fra le opere all'interno, le più notevoli sono l'acquasantiera trecentesca al primo pilastro, la Madonna col Bambino e i Santi Benedetto e Bernardo opera di Bernardino Luini alla quarta campata (è un affresco strappato: non dipinto qui originariamente) e soprattutto il coro ligneo, con 70 stalli in noce intarsiati dall'abbiatense Francesco Giramo entro il 1522. Del chiostro, rifatto tra il 1400 e il 1500, un'ala soltanto è originale. Conserva forme cistercensi la sala capitolare a due navate
