Il suo pelame era d'una bellezza straordinaria, fitto e morbido, di colore giallo rossiccio, a macchie nere orlate di rosso, più piccole sui fianchi e più grandi e più spesse sul dorso, dove formavano una grossa striscia. Ci volle poca fatica pei filibustieri a riconoscere in quell'animale un giaguaro, il più formidabile predatore delle due Americhe, più pericoloso dei coguari e forse anche dei mostruosi orsi grigi delle Montagne Rocciose. Queste fiere, che s'incontrano dovunque, dalla Patagonia agli Stati Uniti, rappresentano nelle due Americhe le tigri e sono temibili quanto queste, possedendone l'agilità, la forza e la ferocia. Abitano per lo più le foreste umide e le rive delle savane e dei fiumi giganti, specialmente del Rio della Plata, delle Amazzoni e dell'Orenoco, amando, cosa strana nei felini, l'acqua. Le stragi che fanno queste fiere sono terribili; essendo dotate d'un appetito fenomenale, assalgono indistintamente tutti gli esseri che incontrano. Le scimmie non hanno scampo, poiché i giaguari s'arrampicano facilmente sugli alberi, né più né meno dei gatti; i bovini e gli equini delle fattorie possono ben difendersi a colpi di corna od a calci, ma soccombono presto poiché i sanguinari predatori piombano addosso a loro con un salto fulmineo spezzando la colonna vertebrale con un solo colpo di zampa. Nemmeno le testuggini sfuggono, sebbene siano difese da gusci di grande resistenza. Le unghie potenti di quelle fiere perforano le doppie corazze delle tartarughe "arrua" ed estraggono la carne saporita. da "Il Corsaro Nero" di Emilio Salgari
