Abitano per lo più le foreste umide e le rive delle savane e dei fiumi giganti, specialmente del Rio della Plata, delle Amazzoni e dell'Orenoco, amando, cosa strana nei felini, l'acqua. Le stragi che fanno queste fiere sono terribili; essendo dotate d'un appetito fenomenale, assalgono indistintamente tutti gli esseri che incontrano. Le scimmie non hanno scampo, poiché i giaguari s'arrampicano facilmente sugli alberi, né più né meno dei gatti; i bovini e gli equini delle fattorie possono ben difendersi a colpi di corna od a calci, ma soccombono presto poiché i sanguinari predatori piombano addosso a loro con un salto fulmineo spezzando la colonna vertebrale con un solo colpo di zampa. Nemmeno le testuggini sfuggono, sebbene siano difese da gusci di grande resistenza.
