Nome scientifico: Libellula fulva (Muller, 1764) Dimensioni: 42-45 mm, apertura alare 65-75 mm. Descrizione della specie: entrambi i sessi, nella fase immatura, hanno colorazione arancione con banda nera dorsale sull'addome e venature centrali, delle ali, gialle. La femmina adulta rimane arancione-marrone, molto scura in età avanzata, con banda dorsale nera mentre il maschio è scuro con occhi blu, fronte e faccia nere e addome ricoperto, ad esclusione degli ultimi tre segmenti, di pruinosità blu-azzurra. Sia nel maschio che nella femmina le punte delle ali sono macchiate di nero mentre le ali posteriori presentano alla base una vistosa macchia nera triangolare. Questi caratteri sono utili per distinguere i maschi di questa specie da quelli di Orthetrum cancellatum che invece presentano ali completamente trasparenti. Libellulla fulva si distingue facilmente anche dalla congenere Libellula depressa per l'addome meno dilatato e per le macchie nere evidenti solo sulle ali posteriori. Distribuzione e habitat: diffusa su tutto il territorio italiano Le larve di L. fulva si trovano in ambienti particolari; sia nei tratti inferiori dei fiumi dove l'acqua scorre lentamente, sia nei laghi o laghetti con un minimo di corrente (imposto dalla falda che si muove o dalla immissione di acque correnti). Questi habitat si trovano quasi sempre affiancati dai boschi, l'ambiente usato dagli individui neosfarfallati per la maturazione. Periodo di attività: adulti da fine aprile a fine agosto.
