The photo is cute ... but lately I see on the forums several close-up photos of the gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), often with pieces of bread and seeds kindly supplied by whom?
We avoid to feed these little invaders, because their European red squirrel disappeared in the British Isles, and the flourishing Italian populations are a real threat to biodiversity, including our beloved birds.
Are acts in public initiatives to eradicate the species, we also we do our part, not nutriamoli.

The peanut obviously have given me, I live close to this park for over 20 years and we will be gone and no 10 times, so do not think to make a very big difference, I will keep this, but look just between you and me if I see a squirrel starving red or green does not interest me much that I would give it to him to eat the same, this is not the case, but maybe instead of "eradicating" a kind, it would be appropriate to "repopulate" the other, even because I do not think that there is room for both, I do not see in many cities of northern Europe all "sti squirrels around" indeed seems to me that our forests are dramatically, sometimes "free of fauna" or at least very "poor "will be an impression, I was born and raised in Umbria and youths going in the woods I saw dozens of animals, today to meet a pheasant I go crazy and then nI find it on mah will be that the word "eradicate" I "sounds good" I in that park before these squirrels, who appeared to be about ten years now is that I saw the red, I could not see anyone, never, perhaps as they say in Milan where I live now "rather than nothing quite beats" be wrong ..... anyway I do not really make a difference, and I appreciate your concern for the environment, certainly commendable in a world of uncaring, through the passage, hello .Marco

Marco

Thanks for the reply Mark.
The red squirrel is not to be "repopulated", playing with difficulty in captivity, wild populations and there are contineranno to be there if not eliminated through direct persecution, habitat modification or introduction of exotic species such as the gray squirrel. Not seen squirrels in the park, I do not know if there were, but your friend gray you play, leaving the park, and goes into the woods where he combines a slaughterhouse, including the predation of nests of various species of birds. Gray squirrels appeared ten years ago because some unconscious released them, and the results are a disaster in many places, in the British Isles the red is gone permanently in the UK, while in Ireland resists efforts in a few places. Into the European evidently the place for two similar species there, remove the other one, the gray andlimina red through competition for food resources, for nest holes where, for direct confrontation.
We make all the difference, in this case not by feeding and not counteracting the eradication, which is not pleasant, but more may be consulted, and more causes suffering and increases exponentially costs.
If you take a ride on the web you can find a lot on the subject, so as not to leave doubts. I repeat to the difference we all do. I'm not a controller, I try to pass information to your conscience your attitude.
a greeting from me
Mark
