l testo è una poesia di tale Antoine Pol. Nella primavera del 1943, un ragazzo di 23 anni che trainava la sua vita nella Parigi occupata dai nazisti, nella più nera povertà, scovò un suo libro su una bancarella del Mercato delle pulci di Vanves, appunto. Il libro, che si intitolava ?motions poétiques, conteneva questa poesia e il ragazzo si chiamava Georges Brassens. Si mise a sfogliarlo, indeciso se spendere o meno il mezzo franco che costava; e fu proprio questa poesia che glielo fece spendere. La mise sommariamente in musica e la lasciò in un cassetto, come spesso faceva. La tirò fuori nel 1971, deciso a inciderla; volle contattare quindi l'autore, scovandone gli estremi alla SACEM, per domandargliene i diritti; immaginarsi chi non li avrebbe concessi a Brassens! I due progettarono di incontrarsi, perché Brassens voleva conoscere l'autore di quella poesia che lo aveva così tanto colpito trent'anni prima; destino volle che Antoine Pol morisse una settimana prima dell'appuntamento. Secondo una testimonianza del nipote, dal nome quasi identico (Bruno Antoine Pol), la vigilia della sua morte Antoine Pol gli disse di "ascoltare la canzone per lui e di impararla a memoria". Il contratto per la cessione dei diritti fu firmato il 4 ottobre 1972 dalla vedova, Yvonne Pol.
