La grande statua, alta 17 metri, è collocata nel tempio jainista (X° secolo) in cima alla collina rocciosa di Sravanabelagola (India del sud). Rappresenta il principe Gometeshwara, che secondo la leggenda rinunciò alle ricchezze ed al potere per dedicarsi alla meditazione. Per raggiungere il tempio occorre salire 620 gradini che portano alla cima, scalzi. E' meta di pellegrinaggi provenienti da tutta l'India. Dà una piacevolissima sensazione salire quei gradini, per il gradevole contatto dei piedi con la roccia liscia e tiepida, la visione del panorama e l'incontro con i pellegrini con vesti molto colorate e visi gioiosi.
