La piazza più importante di Lecce è oggi il risultato delle stratificazioni che per secoli si sono accumulate producendo un insieme di stili diversi che ormai da sempre convivono insieme. In antichità Piazza Sant'Oronzo presentava una diversa planimetria, quando lo spazio dell'Anfiteatro Romano era occultato dalle botteghe ottocentesche. In seguito agli scavi archeologici, il piccolo borgo venne abbattuto per portare alla luce l'antico Anfiteatro. Dal 1656 è stata intitolata al Santo Protettore di Lecce, S.
