Giovanni Baratta nel 1719 eseguì due statue per la facciata della chiesa di S. Teresa a Torino, su commissione di Madama reale, che lo nominò suo scultore ufficiale. L'anno seguente egli scolpì quattro statue allegoriche e, probabilmente, le urne per il tetto di palazzo Madama del quale Juvarra aveva rifatto la facciata. Nel 1725 il Baratta lavorava ancora per i Savoia alla commissione più importante della sua vita: le sculture per la cappella di S. Uberto nel castello della Venaria Reale del Juvarra. A parte numerose opere di minor conto (molte delle quali sono andate distrutte), il Baratta scolpì per questa cappella le statue gigantesche di S. Agostino, S. Anastasio, S. Ambrogio e S. Giovanni Crisostomo,opere che, nonostante le enormi proporzioni, hanno un'eleganza e una grazia difficilmente raggiunte nella scultura del Settecento, fuori della Baviera; il rapporto quasi scherzoso tra le singole figure e il putto alato ricorda Ignaz Gunther. Nell'esecuzione dì queste statue il Baratta fu aiutato da suo nipote, Giovanni Cybei.
