Thanks Ann, as this photo has had over 17500 views I am amazed at the interest it has generated. Northern Laos was an incredible place to visit. I went there looking for colourful ethnic people in traditional clothing to photograph but found they most had discarded those clothes. But what I found was much more interesting; the lives of poor but happy people, kind and friendly, full of joy but living in squaller conditions. Communal wash trough / showers, dirt and mud if it rained, often no land for growing crops and a hot dry dusty existence. We backpacked and travelled by local bus and used 'tuk tucks' as our taxis with local drivers who knew the villages and did not tour companies. The children in villages we did visit that were on the tourist route, swamped us when we arrived with their hands out for lollies or money. Those that were not on the tourist route never asked for anything, were happy to pose for photos and to show us through their 'houses' and around their villages. I have an article on Pentaprism Community No 12 Emagazine on my trip and my website, www.faceofvietnam.com has a number of images under the Laos 2014 link. Along with Northern Vietnam it is a real eyeopener as to the lives of poorer ethnic people. My next adventures will be Northern Thailand and more of Laos with Myanmar on the cards as well.
