Karlovy Vary è una località termale fondata, secondo la leggenda, dal re di Boemia e imperatore del Sacro romano impero Carlo IV e visitata, nel corso dei decenni, da personalità del calibro di Goethe, Beethoven, Gogol, Paganini, Casanova e Mozart, ma anche diversi capi di Stato. È la più grande località termale della Repubblica Ceca . Posta ai piedi dei Krušné Hory (Monti Metalliferi), Karlovy Vary si distende sui due versanti della stretta valle del fiume Teplá (il cui nome significa "caldo" perché d'inverno le sue acque non gelano mai), subito prima della confluenza con il fiume OhÅ™e. Conosciuta anche per il Festival internazionale del cinema di Karlovy Vary e per il liquore digestivo Becherovka, la città vanta anche un discreto patrimonio artistico, fra cui numerosi edifici barocchi ed Art Nouveau.
