Le cascine erano veri e propri villaggi, popolati da centinaia di persone, il cui imperativo era l'autosufficienza. Dentro c'erano abitazioni per i proprietari e alloggi per i contadini, ricoveri per gli animali e i mezzi agricoli. E, separate, e a una certa distanza, i dormitori delle mondine, che nei periodi più impegnativi della coltura del riso arrivavano a migliaia da tutto il Piemonte, ma anche dal Veneto e dall'Emilia e anche da più lontano.
