Il bellissimo e suggestivo borgo di Pentedattilo è stato abbondato a causa della sua posizione geografica. Il luogo è stato spesso oggetto di numerose calamità naturali. Il nome del borgo deriva dalla strana forma della rupe del Monte Calvario che ricorda una ciclopica mano con cinque dita. Grazie all'Associazione Pro Pentedattilo, all'Agenzia dei Borghi solidali con il sostegno di Fondazione con il Sud, alla Comunità europea e a centinaia di ragazzi che arrivano ogni anno attraverso i Campi della legalità Arci e Libera, il borgo è stato riportato in vita. Il borgo è avvolto da una straordinaria leggenda che ruota intorno al castello e vede protagonista la dinastia degli Alberti. Si narra che la notte di Pasqua del 1686 le due famiglie furono protagoniste di una strage sanguinaria. Il barone Bernardino Abenavoli voleva prendere in moglie Antonietta Alberti. La donna però fu chiesta in sposa e concessa da Lorenzo Alberti a Don Petrillo Cortes, figlio del viceré di Napoli. Questa notizia indusse l'ira passionale del barone che la notte di Pasqua, grazie al tradimento di Giuseppe Scrufari, servo infedele degli Alberti, si introdusse all'interno del castello di Pentedattilo con un gruppo di uomini armati. Giunto nella camera da letto di Lorenzo, lo sorprese durante il sonno sparandogli due colpi di archibugio e finendolo con 14 pugnalate e costrinse Antonietta a sposarlo. Ma il vicerè Cortez, inviò una sua spedizione per vendicarsi e fece uccidere tutti gli uomini di Bernardino. Il barone però riuscì a fuggire portando con sé Antonietta, a Vienna. In seguito l'uomo entrò nell'esercito e la donna in convento di clausura. La strage porta con sé altre leggende come quella che, nelle notti di vento, tra le gole della mano del Diavolo si possono udire le urla di dolore di Lorenzo Alberti.
