Parco del Gargano - Il Lago di Varano tra mito e storia.La STORIA: Nel primo secolo D.C., secondo Plinio il Vecchio, al posto dell'attuale lago esisteva una insenatura da lui chiamata Seno Uriano. La formazione di un cordone litoraneo, avvenuta per eventi naturali, ha chiuso l'insenatura facendo nascere così, intorno all'anno 1000, il lago di Varano. Il MITO: Da più di un millennio, di generazione in generazione, si tramanda la leggenda, secondo la quale dove ora c'è il lago esisteva una città, chiamata URIA. A governare la città era il re TAURO, perfido e malvagio come il suo popolo. Per questo, Dio decise di punirli riversando sulla città un devastante diluvio, che finì per inondare l'intera città, dando origine all'attuale lago. ----- Sono personalmente testimone del perdurare di questo mito, essendo nativo di uno dei 3 paesi che si affacciano sul lago (Ischitella, Carpino, Cagnano Varano) e che, secondo il mito, sarebbero stati fondati, in seguito alla distruzione di Uria, dagli abitanti in fuga ed in cerca di luoghi più sicuri.
