Roma Chiesa di S. Alessio all'Aventino. La chiesa di S.Alessio risale al III o IV secolo, quando fu edificata sul luogo precedentemente occupato, secondo la tradizione, dalla casa del padre di Alessio, Eufemiano, ed originariamente dedicata soltanto a S.Bonifacio di Tarso, il patrizio romano martirizzato a Tarso di Cilicia (Anatolia) nei primi anni del IV secolo. Il Liber Pontificalis attesta che la chiesa era divenuta diaconia già nell'VIII secolo, sotto il pontificato di Leone III. Nel 937 i religiosi che officiavano la chiesa ottennero da Alberico II, governatore di Roma, alcune case limitrofe che, riadattate, formarono il primo nucleo del monastero posto sotto la cura di S.Addone, abate di Cluny. Nel 977 papa Benedetto VII affidò la chiesa ad una comunità di monaci Basiliani, rifugiatisi a Roma insieme all'arcivescovo Sergio di Damasco, costretto dai Saraceni a fuggire dalla sua città. Nel 986 l'edificio venne dichiarato basilica e dedicato anche a S.Alessio, sulla cui casa paterna, come sopra menzionato, era stato costruito. Nel XII secolo il monastero, ormai abitato dai Benedettini, venne ricostruito dalla famiglia dei Crescenzi. Altri restauri interessarono il complesso nel corso dei secoli successivi: nel 1216 la basilica fu interamente ricostruita da Onorio III, nel 1431 fu restaurata dai Gerolimini, alla fine del Cinquecento papa Sisto V la elevò a titolo cardinalizio, nel Seicento fu restaurata dal cardinale Guidi di Bagno ed infine nel 1750 dal cardinale Andrea Querini, che commissionò a Tommaso de Marchis anche l'ampliamento del convento e la nuova facciata della chiesa. Ulteriori interventi di restauro furono compiuti tra il 1852 ed il 1860 dai Chierici Regolari di Somasca (detti Somaschi), ai quali Pio IX aveva donato la basilica ed il monastero.
