Una camera di risaia non può essere in pendenza se si vuole evitare che l'acqua scorra via senza essere trattenuta. Deve essere perfettamente in piano. Per garantire una distribuzione uniforme dell'acqua senza ristagni, dentro la camera di risaia non devono esserci avvallamenti, buchi o depressioni. Il risultato è un paesaggio che per il vercellese sembra fatto di tanti stagni coltivati delimitati da semplici argini, ma che ad uno sguardo più attento rivela invece un ampio sistema di gradoni che indicano da quale parte pende la pianura.
