Quando ho chiesto conferma a questi giovani pescatori che stavano scaricando il pesce dal peschereccio dove lavorano se fossero Birmani, mi hanno risposto con un certo orgoglio che erano Hmong. I Hmong sono un'etnia di antica e non chiara origine geografica stanziali in molti stati del mondo. Non hanno una bandiera loro, un inno nazionale, una costituzione, un governo e prendono la nazionalità del luogo dove risiedono. Le nazioni con più Hmong sono la Cina (dove assumono il nome di Miao), la Birmania (da cui sono emigrati questi ragazzi appunto) e soprattutto l'America dove sono una comunità molto numerosa.
