Metelkova Mesto è un centro sociale, uno spazio di aggregazione che coinvolge giovani, artisti, associazioni. Un luogo urbano autogestito e nato all'interno di un'ex caserma, composta da 7 edifici ed estesa per 12500 metri quadri. Qui vengono organizzate attività ed eventi di tipo artistico, musicale, sociale. È un punto di riferimento culturale che richiama artisti da tutto il mondo. Si chiama così perché prende il nome dalla via di Lubiana in cui è situato, Metelkova Ulica. “Mesto” è una parola che in lingua slovena vuol dire “posto”. La storia di Metelkova Mesto inizia nel 1991, con la dichiarazione di indipendenza di Slovenia e Croazia. Dopo questa svolta storica che ha segnato la separazione dalla Jugoslavia, la caserma di Lubiana è stata abbandonata dall'esercito jugoslavo. Questo edificio del secolo XIX, che era stato originariamente una delle sedi dell'esercito Austro Ungarico, si è trovato quindi disabitato. E allora ha iniziato a essere popolato da artisti e creativi che lo hanno ravvivato con le loro opere d'arte, installazioni, decorazioni di street art.
