Tra il 1185 e il 1190 vennero innalzati il transetto, il coro, il deambulatorio e le absidi radiali della basilica. La parte orientale è dell'edificio appare come un luminoso e bianco gioiello gotico innestato su uno degli edifici più belli della Francia romanica, costruito in caldo calcare color ocra e formato dal nartece e della triplice navata, collegati tra loro da tre portali scolpiti, dei quali quello centrale rappresenta uno dei vertici della scultura medievale. Il risultato di questo innesto è abbagliante, il contrasto/ dialogo stilistico esalta le caratteristiche di entrambi i linguaggi ed è la luce a dare la voce ad ogni elemento perché la pietra e le forme cantino la loro melodia e una moltitudine di personaggi biblici, di santi e di demoni raccontino le loro storie scolpite sui capitelli.
