Nel 2008 il Municipio di Lisbona con la creazione della Galeria de Arte Urbana (GAU) ha sentito la necessità di creare un sito dedicato alla Street Art con l'obiettivo di combattere le pratiche di vandalismo e di imbrattamento dei muri e, nello stesso tempo, favorire l'arte di strada, in armonia con la conservazione e il restauro del patrimonio culturale della città. Da allora pareti di fabbriche abbandonate, facciate di edifici fatiscenti, muri e ponti, ma anche pannelli studiati ad hoc, sono diventati le tele ed i supporti di tanti artisti, anche di fama internazionale. Così la città è diventata un vero e proprio museo a cielo aperto e una delle capitali europee della Street Art.
