L'interno della basilica di Santa maria Maggiore ad Ispica,rappresenta una delle testimonianze più significative della cultura artistica tardobarocca e rococò della Sicilia sudorientale.Grazie all'insieme di pitture ed affreschi,nel 1908 la basilica fu eretta a monumento nazionale. Oggi l'intero gruppo di affreschi è considerato uno dei grandi capolavori pittorici del XVIII secolo in Sicilia al punto che una bozza del quadro centrale raffigurante il nuovo e il vecchio testamento è presente al Louvre di Parigi.
