Giuliano V. e Francesco Tarin, ho fatto i dovuti calcoli per risolvere il dilemma:
un Beagle adulto è lungo (coda esclusa, ma qui non si vede) tra i 45 e i 60 cm... Alla distanza di 14 metri la pdc di un 200mm a f/2.8 montato su una 70D è già di 49,3 cm, più che sufficiente per vedere il beagle con i leggeri sfuocati sulle zampe e sul naso come in questa foto, a 20 metri allora la pdc sale addirittura a 1,01 metri.........
Vi invito a guardare le foto dello stesso autore con i cani da slitta: a f/3.2 è già possibile che persino gli husky siano completamente a fuoco già da 18 metri
Riguardo alla pdc del terreno è un'osservazione più calzante, visto che a primo sguardo potrebbe trarre in inganno, però è di semplice soluzione pure questo dilemma: il pov è davvero molto basso e ci sono delle foglie fuori fuoco in primo piano che occludono la porzione di terra messa effettivamente a fuoco; dalla posizione attuale non possiamo sapere se c'era ulteriore "terra" messa a fuoco dietro queste foglie... osservare poi che dietro la porzione che si vede a fuoco la terra evidentemente cambia pendenza, quindi anche la parte messa a fuoco occlude verso un'altra porzione messa potenzialmente a fuoco! 
ultima ma non ultima, la compressione a 200mm (x1.6) fa si che quella striscia che potrebbe essere anche di 30 cm, appaia, da questo pov di ben più pochi cm!
Spero di esser stato esaustivo! Questo è un grande fotografo, i dubbi sono leciti, e vanno risolti per riconoscere i meriti dove ci sono ;)

Julian V. and Francis Tarin, I did the necessary calculations to solve the dilemma:
a Beagle adult is long (excluding the tail, but here you can not see) between 45 and 60 cm ... At a distance of 14 meters the pdc of a 200mm f / 2.8 mounted on a 70D is already 49.3 cm, more than enough to see the beagle with blurred light on the legs and on the noseas in this photo, 20 meters then the pdc rooms even 1.01 meters .........
I invite you to look at photos of the same author with the sled dogs: f / 3.2 is already possible that even the husky are fully focused for 18 meters ;-)
Regarding the pdc of the land is an observation more appropriate, because at first glance might be deceiving, however, is that too simple dilemma: the pov is really very low and there are some leaves out of focus in the foreground that occlude the grounding portion actually on fire; the current position can not know if there was another "land" focus behind these leaves ... then observe that behind the portion which is seen to fire the earth evidently changing slope, hence theapart from focusing occludes to another portion potentially put on fire! 8-)
last but not least, the compression to 200mm (X1.6) ago is that the strip which could also be of 30 cm, to appear, from this pov of well over a few cm!
