In foto, il canale Cavour, al momento quasi in secca, dato che le risaie sono a riposo. Dalla metà di marzo in avanti, la sua portata aumenterà progressivamente - sino a rasentare la parte inerbita che si vede alla sinistra della foto - concomitatamente con la riattivazione delle risaie e del loro allagamento. Il canale, fortemente voluto da Camillo Benso conte di Cavour, da cui appunto prende il nome, è lungo circa 85 km. Fu realizzato completamente a mano da migliaia di uomini in soli tre anni (tra il 1863 e il 1866), attraversando tutta la pianura vercellese, collega il fiume Po al fiume Ticino.
