La fortezza sorge in posizione dominante sul colle di Sarzanello che sovrasta il borgo antico. Il nucleo più antico, documentato dall'XI secolo, fu modificato tra il 1314 e il 1328 da Castruccio Castracani e, nel XV secolo, per ordine di Tomaso Campofregoso. L'attuale configurazione va fatta risalire alla decisione di Lorenzo De Medici di trasformare Sarzana in un avamposto fortificato a difesa della signoria fiorentina. La particolarità della fortificazione, giunta intatta fino a noi, è il modulo triangolare, con tre torrioni ai vertici ed una possente struttura triangolare a protezione dell'ingresso. Attualmente la Fortezza è aperta al pubblico e sede di eventi culturali. (musei.liguria.beniculturali.it) (C'è già in galleria anche una versione in "veste autunnale”)
