Artena è un borgo a breve distanza da Roma e sorge sui Monti Lepini. Il suo centro storico, arroccato lungo un costone calcareo all'estremità meridionale dei Castelli Romani, è uno dei meglio conservati del Lazio. I suoi vicoli stretti, rampe e bellezze architettoniche rendono questo paesino incantevole. Storicamente l'area ha origini preromane, come testimoniano le mura poligonali costruite, molto probabilmente, dai Volsci sei mesi prima di Cristo. Distrutta dai Romani nel 404 C.C. rivide la luce poi nel Medioevo con il nome di Montefortino, come castello fortificato. In seguito entrò a far parte del patrimonio ecclesiastico della Santa Sede, che quindi aveva il compito di proteggere il suo territorio. Il feudo nel 1557 fu incendiato e distrutto completamente per volere di Papa Paolo IV, nemico dei Colonna, in quel momento famiglia di spicco di Montefortino. Dopo lo spargimento di sangue i suoi abitanti fuggirono sul pendio scosceso e costruirono il paese che possiamo ammirare oggi. Nel 1600 arrivò la famiglia Borghese che fece costruire un palazzo, piazze, ostelli, archi e molte altre bellezze architettoniche. Nel 1873 il nome cambiò in Artena.
