Palazzo Borromeo sull'Isola Bella, Lago Maggiore, nacque come edificio per la villeggiatura della famiglia, ma anche come luogo di rappresentanza destinato a ospiti illustri. I documenti di casa elencano con puntualità il passaggio di teste coronate e di principi: l'imperatore Leopoldo II d'Asburgo-Lorena nel 1791, i reali di Sardegna Carlo Felice e Maria Cristina nel 1828, la regina Vittoria d'Inghilterra nel 1879, il re e le regine d'Italia, i reali del Belgio, fino a Carlo e Diana nel 1984.
