Casteldilago fu edificata su una collina rocciosa che domina di oltre cento metri la valle dove scorre il fiume Nera, che da il nome alla Valnerina. Il borgo, di cui per la prima volta si ha notizia scritta nel 1033, era una fortificazione strategica per la sicurezza della Valnerina, poiché controllava una strada trasversale rispetto alle due grandi arterie consolari: la via Flaminia e la via Salaria. Questa antica strada si chiamava via Curia e collegava le città di Rieti e Terni con Spoleto.
