Il tutto deve avvenire al buio, o in penombra. Si colloca la fotocamera su un supporto, si compone la scena, si inquadra, si mette a fuoco (non è male bloccare la messa a fuoco o impostarla manualmente), si seleziona il tempo di scatto (15, 20, 30 secondi, ecc, o la posa B) e, a luci spente e a tapparelle chiuse, si preme il pulsante di scatto e si accende la torcia elettrica facendo delle "pennellate" di luce sul soggetto da fotografare. Al termine dell'esposizione si valuta il risultato sul monitor della fotocamera ed, eventualmente, si possono fare altre riprese variando tempi di esposizione, diaframmi e modalità di illuminazione per effetti visivi diversi.
