Il Castello dei Ventimiglia di Castelbuono ha una storia lunga 700 anni, sorge in un incantevole borgo che lo custodisce, alle pendici del “Colle Milocca”, tra il mare e il Parco delle Madonie, deve le sue origini ai Ventimiglia, Signori della Contea di Geraci che, agli inizi del 1300, diedero avvio alla costruzione di un possente Maniero sul poggio dominante l'antico casale di “Ypsigro”. Nel 1317 Francesco I di Ventimiglia, dei Conti di Geraci, sposato con Costanza Chiaramonte, lo edificò secondo il modello di “maschio”, o mastio, torre comune nei castelli medievali, cui si affianca la residenza. La nascita del Castello fece crescere così tanto la piccola comunità che, nel 1454, Giovanni I vi si trasferì con la sua “corte”, facendolo diventare il centro più importante degli immensi possessi territoriali dei Ventimiglia, portando con sé la sacra Reliquia del teschio di S. Anna, la patrona del paese. La reliquia è custodita all'interno della Cappella Palatina (1684), interamente decorata a stucco su fondo oro zecchino, opera dei fratelli Giuseppe e Giacomo Serpotta. Lo straordinario apparato decorativo degli stucchi serpottiani rappresenta uno dei più mirabili esempi del Barocco siciliano, e si discosta dalle formule artistiche utilizzate negli oratori palermitani, per la sua ricchezza e l'inusuale rappresentazione di soggetti zoomorfi e fitomorfi che animano le superfici e l'architettura.
