La Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore sorge sul colle Esquilino ed è la sola ad aver conservato la primitiva struttura paleocristiana, sia pure arricchita da aggiunte successive. La leggenda vuole che il ricco patrizio romano Giovanni e sua moglie, non avendo figli, decidessero di dedicare una chiesa alla Vergine Maria, apparsa loro in sogno una una notte di agosto del 352 d.C.. Nel sogno, la Madonna li informò che un miracolo avrebbe indicato loro il luogo su cui costruire la chiesa. Anche Papa Liberio fece lo stesso sogno e, il giorno seguente, recatosi sull'Esquilino, lo trovò coperto di neve. Il papa stesso tracciò il perimetro dell'edificio e la chiesa fu costruita a spese dei due coniugi. Ancora oggi, ogni anno, il 5 agosto viene rievocato il miracolo della neve con un'apposita celebrazione durante la quale, dalla sommità della basilica, vengono liberati in aria dei petali bianchi che producono un effetto davvero suggestivo. Profonde trasformazioni della basilica, che fino ad allora aveva conservato il suo aspetto sostanzialmente medievale, furono avviate tra la fine del XVI e l'inizio del XVII secolo da Sisto V e da Paolo V, che eressero le due grandi cappelle laterali, dette appunto Sistina e Paolina, e il palazzo a destra della facciata. Tra il 1670 ed il 1676, Carlo Rainaldi ridisegnò l'abside nelle forme attuali. All'interno, si segnalano importanti opere d'arte. Il soffitto risale al tempo di Alessandro VI Borgia (1492-1503) e, secondo la tradizione, venne dorato col primo carico di oro americano, dono di Isabella di Spagna. L'arco di trionfo è decorato da mosaici con Storie dell'infanzia di Gesù del periodo di Sisto III. Nel catino absidale, il bellissimo mosaico fu eseguito, e firmato, da Iacopo Torriti, alla fine del XIII secolo. (fonte turismoroma.it)
