La Basilica di San Vitale a Ravenna risale al VI sec., iniziata sotto il regno dei Goti, e proseguì sotto quello del Bizantini che avevano conquistato Ravenna nel 540 e fu terminata durante l'impero di Giustiniano. Venne fondata dal Vescovo Ecclesio, tra 525 e 532, appena arrivato da Costantinopoli dove si era recato per una missione. La chiesa sorge nel luogo in cui secondo la Legenda Aurea di Jacopo da Varagine, è stato ucciso San Vitale, ed è dedicata a lui. I lavori sono stati finanziati da Giuliano l'argentario (banchiere greco arricchitosi nella guerra greco-gotica) si pensa che fosse un agente di Giustiniano, incaricato di promuovere grandi imprese costruttive per affermare il dominio bizantino anche culturale in Italia. E' stata consacrata dal Vescovo Massimiano nel 547-48. Il visitatore è abbagliato dalla ricchezza dei mosaici con dettagli di origine orientale e legati alla tradizione ellenistico-romana ; accanto ai simboli frequenti nella cristianità orientale come il pavone, sarà possibile scorgere volatili e arbusti presenti nelle pinete e valli del ravennate. I Mosaici di san Vitale sono di epoche diverse ma complessivamente appartengono al VI sec. I più antichi, del tempo di Ecclesio, sono quelli del catino absidale con la Teofania. Nelle pareti ai laterali dell'abside si trovano i due mosaici con il Corteo di Giustiniano e il Corteo di Teodora. In tutti gli spazi disponibili (lunette, estradossi degli archi, pareti,ecc.) sono ospitati mosaici con scene tratte dalle Sacre scritture.
