La Pomelia o Plumeria viene dalle Americhe Tropicali. Si è naturalizzata facilmente in Sicilia grazie al clima mite. È un arbusto dai fiori bianchi e profumati. Per le strade siciliane, in determinati periodi dell'anno, si vedono molti balconi adornati da queste meravigliose piante dai fiori bianchi, profumatissimi. Nelle Maldive viene comunemente chiamata pianta del tempio perché è molto facile trovarla soprattutto nei pressi delle moschee e dei luoghi di culto. Nelle isole Hawaii, invece, i suoi fiori sono spesso usati per comporre ghirlande da donare agli ospiti in segno di pace ed amicizia. In oriente l'albero di Pomelia viene considerato l'albero dell'immortalità e della rinascita, ciò perché i suoi fiori sbocciano anche dopo la recisione di un ramo. Nel linguaggio dei fiori e delle piante la plumeria simboleggia la bellezza e la semplicità. In Sicilia si dice che una madre che ha una figlia femmina, non può tenere la pomelia dentro casa. Ciò perché, secondo la leggenda, questa pianta impedirebbe le nozze della ragazza.
