Anticamente Ponte Sant'Angelo era denominato Ponte Elio, dal nome dell'imperatore Elio Adriano che lo volle edificare nel 136 d.C. per collegare la città all'ingresso del suo mausoleo: l'attuale Castel Sant'Angelo L'aspetto del ponte, ormai comunemente denominato Sant'Angelo per la statua dell'Arcangelo che sovrasta il castello, ha subito varie trasformazioni: vennero abbattuti i suoi torrioni e furono aggiunte due statue raffiguranti San Pietro e San Paolo. Nel 1668 si arricchì ulteriormente di dieci statue di angeli recanti i simboli della passione. Il Bernini, su incarico di Clemente IX, ne disegnò le figure, affidandone l'esecuzione ai suoi allievi. È nel 1882, a seguito di lavori di ristrutturazione, che il ponte assunse l'aspetto attuale.
