La storia del Castello di Venere, affonda le proprie radici nel passato più lontano, quando sulla vetta del monte, giunsero i Sicani, un popolo indigeno, che intorno al XII secolo a.C. , elevarono una piccola ara all'aperto, dedicata ad una divinità femminile, considerata dea dell'amore, della fecondità e protettrice dei naviganti. Successivamente gli Elimi e i Punici-Cartaginesi mantennero il culto della dea, da loro chiamata Astarte, incrementando la sua fama fra tutti i popoli del Mediterraneo. I punici furono i primi ad introdurre riti e usi orientali tra cui, il culto della prostituzione sacra, e l'allevamento delle colombe, animale sacro alla divinità, che volavano intorno le mura del cosiddetto "recinto sacro". Pellegrini da ogni parte vi giungevano per rendere omaggio alla dea protettrice, intrattenendosi in seguito con le bellissime sacerdotesse, chiamate Jerodule, che si concedevano volentieri ai marinai in nome della dea.
