La strelitzia o sterlizia: prezioso fiore quanto le orchidee, è molto apprezzato per l'incredibile bellezza ed è altrettanto noto come “fiore del paradiso” o “uccello del paradiso”, a causa della sua forma particolarissima, del suo portamento elegante, dei suoi cromatismi a contrasto, delle sue dimensioni vistose. La strelitzia è una pianta sempreverde perenne. Si sviluppa a cespuglio, con foglie enormi, steli lunghi e dritti, grandi fiori simili a creste che, nel caso della varietà regina (la più diffusa), alternano l'arancione vivo all'azzurro intenso. Introdotta in Europa nel 1700, la strelitzia fu subito dedicata a Carlotta-Sofia di Meclemburg-Strelitz, vedova di re Giorgio III, cui la pianta deve il nome.
